YESS is an international exchange programme funded by the Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (NOREC), a Norwegian Government Agency.

From 2015 to 2020, the programme has given 211 Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from 15 different countries across Africa and Asia Pacific the once in a lifetime opportunity to live and work in another country for six months.

The YESS Girls Movement is a collaboration between WAGGGS and NOREC. The programme, dubbed as ‘a journey of a lifetime’ is an International exchange programme where young women are facilitated to travel to another country (away from their homes) and are given a platform for six months to advocate for and take action on global issues that affect girls including gender equality, climate change and sustainable community development. This year, the YESS programme will give volunteers the opportunity to work from their Member Organisations for a year with assigned tasks under the following result areas.

  • Result Area: Strengthened resilience and agility of Girl Guiding/Scouting organisations to withstand, cope with and adapt to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other future crises.
  • Result area: Amplified visibility of the Girl Guiding/Scouting Movement as a leading national and global voice for positive change on issues important to girls and young women
  • Result area: Improved ability of girls and young women to identify, speak out, take action and influence community members and decision makers on issues
  • Result area: Increased number and retention of girls and young women (including the marginalised, discriminated and excluded) joining the Girl
  • Result area: Improved ability and confidence of girls and young women to adapt to the changes brought about by the COVID-19 epidemic
  • Result area: Strengthened network of YESS Alumnae that are motivated to sustain and support the programme results

WAGGGS Member Organisations that have so far participated in the programme include: Bangladesh Burundi, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nepal, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe Girl Guiding Associations.

Now a flagship programme that has become a favourite for young women in Africa and Asia Pacific, the YESS Girls Movement has amplified voices of Young Women in WAGGGS’ Member Organisations.
