The YESS Programme

Youth Exchange South to South

About YESS Movement

The Youth Exchange South to South (YESS) Girls Movement is a WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) International Exchange offer supported and funded by Norec (Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation).

The Programme started in the Africa Region in 2015 and has to date facilitated 211 young women between the ages of 18 to 25 from 15 Member organisations in Africa and Asia Pacific. The exchange is managed in respective associations by the country coordinators and the YESS BUS. The Bus comprises the Country Coordinator, Chief Commissioner, International Commissioner, Projects Commissioner, Accountant and the YESS Peer.

Ghana Girl Guides Association was signed on to this exchange in January, 2020. The Association sent out three young women to Uganda, Rwanda and Madagascar. Four young women from Tanzania, Rwanda, Madagascar and Uganda were also sent to Ghana.

During the six months stay in Girl Guides Association in an assigned host country, the YESS Girls are given actual leadership responsibilities and work with very specific targets under six core initiatives namely;

  • Welcome to my world – Participants reach out to under reached, unreached and hard to reach areas and recruit girls and young women into girl guiding.

  • The Green Tech Generation – A campaign which challenges young women to take responsibility of their environment.

  • The Red Pride – Education where girls and young women are properly coached on menstrual hygiene and how to take action during their periods.

  • YES! Girls Can Campaign – This urges the participants to campaign on issues that affect girls demonstrating the positive impact they can have on the lives of others.

  • The Good Turn Community project – In honour of the Guide Promise, the participants undertake at least one sustainable community support project in their host country every year.

  • Friends of Guiding project – Engagement of prominent men and women as friends of guiding so that they can support (financially and otherwise), speak out and take action on issues that affect girls.

Since its inception, YESS Girls have undertaken 20 Good Turn Community Projects in respective host countries. Ghana Girl Guides welcomed its first alumnae on the 27th July, 2020.
