Nurturing Leadership: Ghana Girl Guides Association Empowers Adult Leaders at the National Training Centre
The Ghana Girl Guides Association orchestrated a transformative adult leaders training session on 14th October, 2023, at the National Training Centre in Achimota. This insightful event provided new adult leaders with a comprehensive understanding of the essence of guiding, strategies for initiating and managing a Girl Guide unit in their schools, insights into the eight-point program/scheme of work, effective membership drive tactics, and the unique skill of processing aloe vera into a bathing gel. Additionally, participants were introduced to the exciting travel opportunities offered by the association, highlighting the multifaceted and enriching experiences that come with being a part of the largest voluntary women’s organization in Ghana.
Facilitated by Madam Joana (a trefoil guide), the training session delved into the fundamental principles of establishing and managing a Girl Guide unit within registered schools. Participants gained valuable insights into effective leadership techniques, curriculum development, and the cultivation of a supportive and nurturing environment that fosters the holistic development of young girls. The session emphasized the crucial role that adult leaders play in shaping the guiding experience and empowering the next generation of young women.
The also had the opportunity to learn guiding songs and taps performed at all guiding events. A key highlight of the training session was the exploration of the eight-point program/scheme of work, designed to provide a structured framework for engaging and empowering Girl Guides. Through interactive workshops and group discussions, participants gained a comprehensive understanding of each program component, equipping them with the necessary tools to effectively integrate these elements into their unit activities and initiatives.
Facilitated by the membership coordinator (Rosemary Tetteh), participants were introduced to effective membership drive strategies, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and outreach in expanding the reach and impact of the Ghana Girl Guides Association. The session highlighted the registration process, dues payment and the significance of building strong relationships within the school and local community, fostering a sense of belonging and collective empowerment among potential new members.
As a testament to the association’s commitment to holistic development, the training session included a hands-on demonstration of processing aloe vera into a bathing gel. Participants learned about the natural benefits and applications of aloe vera, gaining valuable insights into sustainable and eco-friendly personal care practices. This skill served as a practical example of the association’s dedication to nurturing well-rounded and empowered leaders. This was facilitated by Madam Everlove (trefoil guide).
YESS Alumni also engaged adult leaders on the Youth Exchange South-South (YESS) Programme, the opportunities it comes with, and the application processes.
Exploring Travel Opportunities and Enriching Experiences: The training session concluded with an exciting introduction to the travel opportunities offered by the Ghana Girl Guides Association. Participants were inspired by the prospect of exploring new cultures, engaging in community service initiatives, and building lasting connections with Girl Guides from around the world. This introduction emphasized the transformative and global perspective that comes with being a part of the association, encouraging participants to embrace the enriching experiences that await them.
Through a comprehensive blend of practical skills, leadership insights, and global perspectives, the session not only equipped participants with the tools for effective unit management and program implementation but also inspired a sense of purpose and collective impact within the Ghana Girl Guides community.
