YESS Girls Movement and Partners Host Free HIV/AIDS Screening in Chorkor, Accra
The YESS Girls Movement-Ghana, on December 1st, 2023 marked World HIV/AIDS Day with a remarkable event in Chorkor, Accra. This initiative, held in partnership with Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) and Women of Dignity Alliance (WODA), aimed to raise awareness and provide critical health concerns on HIV/AIDS to the community. The event commenced with an enlightening sensitization program on HIV/AIDS, conducted by healthcare experts and volunteers of the Association. The YESS Country Coordinator, Sylvia Nicole Eshun indicated that, this informative session sought to dispel myths, educate community members on prevention methods, encourage testing, and reduce the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. The emphasis was on fostering an open dialogue about sexual health and well-being within the Chorkor community. Others present were the YESS Alumni Chair (Valentina Monnie), the YESS 2023 Professionals (Nalumu Christa and Kwizera Florence) together with other volunteers of the YESS Programme.
As part of the comprehensive health initiative, free HIV/AIDS screenings were made available to all attendees. This essential service, facilitated by dedicated healthcare professionals, aimed to provide access to testing and early detection, ensuring timely intervention and treatment if needed. Over 100 individuals took advantage of this opportunity to prioritize their health and well-being. Recognizing the pivotal role of prevention, the YESS Girls Movement-Ghana and its partners distributed over 3000 pieces of condoms free of charge to the community.
This proactive approach toward prevention and safe practices is fundamental in curbing the transmission of HIV/AIDS and promoting sexual health awareness among community members. The collaboration between the YESS Girls Movement, PPAG, and WODA exemplifies the power of partnerships in advocating for health equity and community well-being. By combining resources, knowledge, and dedication, these organizations worked together to make a tangible impact on the health landscape of Chorkor.
The event was not only about screenings and condom distribution; it was about empowering the community to take charge of their health. It aimed to create a supportive environment where individuals felt encouraged to seek information, access essential services, and break the barriers of stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. This underscored the collective resolve to combat HIV/AIDS, spread awareness, and foster a community where individuals feel empowered and supported in making informed decisions about their health.
