‘Make Our Own’ Project in Greater Accra Region
As part of the Association’s aim to promote Menstrual Hygiene Management among women in Ghana, the Ghana Girl Guides Association has trained about seventy girls and young women in making reusable sanitary pads from locally sourced materials.
Ashley Asante of SOS Hermann Gmeiner International College led the ‘Make our Own’ project in Ghana during the summer, alongside a team of young women from the Ghana Girl Guides Association. Girls and young women including the hearing impaired were trained to make reusable sanitary pads.
In recent times, adolescent girls who are less privileged subsequently face challenges in catering to their menstrual hygiene needs due to the high tax on sanitary products making them more expensive since sanitary products in the country have been classified as luxury items. This initiative aimed to address the affordability issue caused by the government’s taxation on sanitary products, gaining national media attention and offering a sustainable, locally-produced solution using fabric scraps from sewing businesses.
The training, chaired by the National Training Coordinator, Mrs. Stephanie Naa Dei Ayariga was organized for young girls at Ningo Prampram in the Greater Accra Region who are unable to purchase sanitary pads due to high prices and absenting themselves from school as a result.
