Empowering Women’s Health: YESS Girls Movement-Ghana Hosts a Transformative Health Screening Event at Makola
The YESS Girls Movement-Ghana left an indelible mark on the Makola community on the 24th of October, 2023, by hosting a comprehensive free health screening event to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The event, held at the National Training Centre, was a resounding success, underscoring the organization’s commitment to promoting women’s health and fostering a culture of proactive care. With a focus on essential health screenings such as glucose levels, blood pressure, and breast examinations, the event aimed to empower the market women of Makola with the tools and knowledge needed to prioritize their well-being. Present were the Senior YESS Country Coordinator (Sylvia Nicole Eshun), YESS Professional Participants, YESS Alumni, other members of the YESS BUS and health professionals from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra.

The Ghana Girl Guides National Training Centre buzzed with excitement and anticipation as the women of the bustling Makola market gathered to participate in the health screening event. The YESS Girls Movement-Ghana team, in collaboration with healthcare professionals from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, welcomed the diverse group of participants with warmth and enthusiasm, creating an inclusive and supportive environment where all attendees felt valued and heard.


The health screening event offered a diverse range of services catering to the unique health needs of the participants. Attendees had the opportunity to undergo glucose level checks, essential for monitoring blood sugar levels, ensuring early detection of any potential complications of breast cancer. Additionally, blood pressure monitoring sessions provided crucial insights into cardiovascular health, empowering the women to be more conscious of their overall well-being. The breast examination sessions, conducted with care and compassion, emphasized the significance of regular screenings and self-examinations in the early detection of breast cancer, fostering a culture of proactive health management among the attendees.

The participation level at the event was remarkable, with an overwhelming turnout of market women from different sections of Makola. Health professionals commended the YESS Girls Movement-Ghana for its proactive approach to women’s health advocacy and its initiative in addressing critical health issues within the community. Remarks from the healthcare experts highlighted the importance of such events in promoting awareness and providing necessary health services to women who may not have had access to these resources otherwise. Women who were liable were contacted by the movement for further health checks and attention.
